The internet is a world
system of interconnected computer networks that uses the Standard Internet
Protocol suite to link numerous computers. The internet carries an extensive
range of information resources and services such as the inter-linked hypertext
documents and applications of the World Wide Web(www), the infrastructure that
support emails and peer-to-peer networks for file sharing and telephoning.
Unlike online services
which are centrally controlled, the internet is decentralized by design. Each
internet computer called a host is independent. Its operators can choose which
internet services to use and which local services to make available to the world
internet community. No doubt, this anarchy of design works very well. There are
various ways to access the internet. Most GSM network providers offer access to
some internet services. One can also gain access to the internet via a
commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP), like the City Network, Excessimo
Networks, etc located in Owerri Imo State - Nigeria.
There is no person or
group of persons that can boast of owning the internet or have total control of
the system. The internet is more of a concept than an actual tangible entity;
it relies on a physical infrastructure that connects networks to other
networks.
The
Internet and the World Wide Web(www)
The internet and
the World Wide Web or simply web, are not the same. Many people misuse these
two terminologies. The internet is a massive network of networks. It connects
millions of computers globally, forming a network in which any computer can
interact with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the
internet.
On
the other hand, the World Wide Web(www) is a way of accessing information over the
medium of the internet. It uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (http). The web
is an information sharing model that is built on the internet. The web browser
is used to surf the internet, which include internet explorer, Mozilla firefox,
google chrom, opera, safari, avant, to mention but a few.
